There is a scene that has played out thousands of times this year.
Someone owns a computer. Not old, perhaps three or four years. Decent CPU, enough RAM, an SSD, a perfectly usable machine. And then the message arrives: this device does not meet the system requirements for Windows 12, the newest Windows release. A coprocessor called TPM, a particular firmware level, a CPU generation released a few months too early — some technical detail the user never knew and never wanted to know suddenly decides the lifespan of their machine.
The device works. But the operating system expecting it declares it unfit.
This moment is not anonymous. It strikes people who invested. And it tells us something about the architecture of our choices — about the question of who actually decides how long a computer lives.
The most fundamental choice
We argue about software often. About apps, browsers, services. But the choice determining everything else usually falls unconsciously: the choice of operating system.
The operating system is the ground beneath everything. It decides which programs run. Which standards hold. Which data leaves the device and which does not. Who controls updates. Who sets the lifecycle. Who ultimately has a say in the question: whom does this computer belong to?
Choosing Windows means choosing not just a program. It means choosing a model: a model in which the vendor dictates the pace, in which security updates are tied to conditions, in which telemetry is the norm, in which the user remains a customer — even after paying.
Swimming with the crowd
Most people choose Windows. Not out of conviction. Out of habit. Because it is simply there. Because the computer shipped with it. Because everyone else uses it. Because switching seems impossible.
That is not stupid. It is inertial. And it is exactly the inertia on which a business model built — a model relying not on satisfaction but on inertia profit. Whoever does not switch because the switch seems arduous is the perfect user: paying, silent, staying.
But inertia is not a choice. It is the opposite of choice. And whoever leaves the most fundamental decision of their digital infrastructure to habit has not made it — someone else has made it for them.
Linux on the desktop has grown up
Let us talk about the present. Something has changed here that many are not yet aware of.
Ten years ago Linux on the desktop was a project for the patient. Today it is a finished affair. GNOME and KDE deliver interfaces that are considered, lean and coherent — not a collection of dialogue windows but genuine desktop environments with their own style. Distributions like Fedora, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, openSUSE install in minutes, detect hardware automatically, ship with browser, office suite, mail, media players and app stores that actually work.
Wayland has modernised graphics output. PipeWire has unified audio. Flatpak and Snap isolate applications cleanly. Printer management, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, multi-monitor — all of it is standard today, not experiment. Anyone who last tried five years ago and failed would be amazed.
Financially prudent, technically superior
Linux costs nothing. That is not the most important argument, but it is true. No licence fees, no subscription trap, no artificial editions parking features behind paywalls.
What matters more: Linux is often the technically better choice. It boots faster. It runs smoothly on older hardware that labours under Windows. It consumes less RAM, less storage, fewer CPU cycles for tasks unrelated to the user’s work. A Linux system idles quietly. A Windows system works constantly — for whom, exactly?
The answer is uncomfortable. Many of these background processes serve the commercial interests of the vendor: telemetry, advertising in the start menu, recommendations, account linking, diagnostic data that is not disableable, only reducible. An operating system that spends resources to show the user advertisements is not a tool. It is a distribution channel.
What an operating system should do
An operating system has one job: give the user a stable, secure foundation on which to carry out their work. Nothing more. Execute programs, manage files, address hardware, provide networking. Be invisible — reliable, economical, predictable.
Linux does exactly that. It wastes no CPU cycles on a corporation’s interests. It occupies no RAM for diagnostic pipelines the user never authorised. It fills no disk with pre-installed software nobody wanted and barely removes. It does what an operating system should do — and nothing else.
That is not ascetic minimalism. It is respect for the user and for their resources.
Freedom is the real reason
Financially and technically Linux is a strong choice. But the most important reason is different.
Linux belongs to you. Not legally in every detail — but practically. You decide when to update. You decide which software runs. You decide which data leaves the device. You decide how long to use a device — not the vendor whose business interest lies in selling you new ones regularly.
With Windows, Microsoft decides. With macOS, Apple decides. With Linux, you decide.
That is the difference between renting and owning. Between a device serving you and one belonging to you but obeying someone else. For people to whom sovereignty matters — who understand that freedom is defended not in grand gestures but in small everyday decisions — this is no marginal topic. It is the core.
Drivers and convenience — how good it has become
The old argument goes: Linux cannot handle the hardware. No longer true.
The kernel supports a breadth of hardware today that is second to none. Graphics cards from AMD and Intel run with built-in, free drivers that work out of the box. NVIDIA, after years of resistance, has opened proprietary drivers and improved Wayland support. Wi-Fi sticks, printers, scanners, cameras, audio devices, docking stations — most are recognised the moment they are plugged in. No driver CD-ROM. No reboot. Plug in, work.
Comfort has increased too. Software centres deliver graphical installation with a click. Updates govern the entire system centrally — not just the browser, but everything. Package managers resolve dependencies automatically. If you wish, you can work for months without ever seeing a terminal.
Honest about the edges
And yet: there are corners that remain rough.
Specialised hardware — professional audio interfaces, certain MIDI controllers, older industrial equipment — can cause trouble. Games with kernel-level anti-cheat systems often do not work because the publishers do not support Linux. Adobe products and Microsoft Office are not available natively. Anyone dependent on those tools must consider virtual machines, Wine or alternatives.
That is honest. Concealing helps no one. But these edges are shrinking. Valve proved with Steam Deck and Proton that thousands of Windows games run under Linux — often performing well, often surprisingly trouble-free. By now the majority of the Steam library is playable, and platforms like ProtonDB help gauge what works and what does not. Unless you depend on kernel-level anti-cheat systems, you will find that gaming on Linux is no longer a compromise but a mature, growing platform. Compatibility grows month by month. Interoperability with networks, file formats and protocols is in many places better than with proprietary systems. Linux does not stand still. It improves constantly — on the side that counts: compatibility, interoperability, drivers.
2026 could be the year
“The year of the Linux desktop” is a running gag, older than many distributions. Predicted for twenty years, never arrived. But this time feels different.
Not because Linux suddenly became perfect. But because the alternative got worse. Windows 12 users face a situation in which fully functional hardware becomes obsolete by an operating system decision. Recycled PCs that could serve for years under Linux end up as electronic waste because Windows denies them the right to exist. That is economically absurd and ecologically irresponsible.
More and more people have had enough. Enough of forced upgrades. Enough of accounts one must create to use a local device. Enough of telemetry calling itself opt-out but never truly falling silent. And they discover that switching is feasible — easier than feared, with results better than hoped.
The transitions happen quietly. No mass campaigns, no headlines. One by one. A family member who installed Linux on the old laptop. A small business that moved accounting to LibreOffice. A school running a computer room on thin clients with Linux. Many small decisions forming a movement together.
