Our philosophy: Technology should work for people. Not the other way around.
What “libre” means
The name says it all: lib — from libre, the Latin-Romance word for freedom. Not free as in free of charge, but free as in sovereign.
We work with software that is open. Not because it sounds affordable, but because open software is the only kind you can truly own. The kind you can inspect, adapt and pass on. That has no back doors you haven’t opened yourself.
That sounds idealistic. But it is, above all, practical.
The person behind the tools
Behind libcom.de is a single person with a long memory and a broad toolkit. Jochen Demmer has been working in and with the open source community for more than two decades — from small single-board computers to distributed server environments, from home networks to production-critical infrastructures.
What drives him is not fascination with technology for its own sake. It is the question: Who does this system actually work for?
“Power to the People” is not a slogan. It is a requirement for every system we build.
How we work
Every project begins with a conversation. What do you have? What do you need? What do you want to manage yourself in the long term?
From that, we don’t create an off-the-shelf package, but an approach that fits your actual requirements. We document what we do. We explain what is being built. And we make sure that in the end you are not dependent on us — but can be, if you choose.
That is what we mean by good craft.
Principles
What drives us.
Openness
Open source software is not a compromise — it is the standard against which everything else must be measured.
Sovereignty
Your data, your systems, your decisions. No dependencies you haven't consciously chosen.
Craft
Technology is a craft. Good craft knows its tools — and knows when each one fits.
Clarity
Explaining complex systems clearly is an art. You should always understand what is running in your environment.
Community
Nobody reinvents the wheel. We benefit from a global community and give back to it.
Longevity
Not the fastest solution, but the right one. Systems that still work in five years.
